is often a formidable task of intimidating length, and theacknowledgements offer the students ‘an important opportunity to publiclyrecognizing the role of mentors and the sacrifices of loved ones’ (Hyland, 2004a).And unlike master students who might go into professional workplaces, doctoralstudents are ‘generally anticipating an academic career and are often alreadyapprenticed to a scholarly community’ (Hyland 2003). As one of the Chinese studentswrote in his acknowledgements, ‘Doing this PhD is a legitimate peripheralparticipation process into the academic research community’. The importance ofacknowledgements was confirmed by the data from the corpus as all the texts in thecorpus contained an acknowledgements section (see Table 4.1). As shown in Table 4.1, the corpus is comprised of acknowledgements totaling11,369 and 11,118 words respectively written by native and Chinese writers. Theaverage length was about the same, with the native sample 8.4 words longer than theChinese sample. However, a closer look at other statistics rendered by the softwareSPSS 20.0 shows more differences between these two.

Conclusion

As Hyland (2004a) puts it, acknowledgements are sophisticated and complexgenres with a coherent structure and routinely employed patterns of expressions.Through this generic framework, writers are able to not only convey their gratitudebut also display an appropriate scholarly competence. With the aim to find out hownative and non-native speakers of English organize their expressions of gratitude, thestudy has examined the macro-structural organization as well as the micro linguisticfeatures of 60 acknowledgements accompanying English-language dissertations in thearea of linguistics written by Chinese doctoral candidates and their counterparts inAmerica.As for the first research question on the differences in generic structure ofacknowledgements composed by Chinese and American students, the results showthat Chinese students largely follow the conventional generic structure of dissertationacknowledgements as described in Hyland’s ‘three-tier structure’ model, while nativewriters tend to construct more complex acknowledgements with a greater level offlexibility though they still comply with the norms. It verifies Bhatia’s (1993:13) viewthat the two most important features of genre is the emphasis on ‘convention’ on theone hand and ‘innovation’ on the other.
