摘要:China as a country is paying much attention to English teaching. At first, the range of itsEnglish teaching was narrow, focusing only on teaching vocabulary, grammar and translation.With a more thorough study of English teaching,improvement of students' listening, speaking,reading and writing abilities and cultivation of their cultural appreciation, were graduallyemphasized.

Mezirow's transformative dimensions of adult learning have all made great contributionstowards adult education.


1.3 English Teaching in China
China as a country is paying much attention to English teaching. At first, the range of itsEnglish teaching was narrow, focusing only on teaching vocabulary, grammar and translation.With a more thorough study of English teaching,improvement of students' listening, speaking,reading and writing abilities and cultivation of their cultural appreciation, were graduallyemphasized. Now, Chinese English teaching focuses on multi-level language teachingpractice and research: English major teaching, college English teaching and English teachingin senior vocational, primary, middle and high schools. Such research centers on the teachingmethods of vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, reading and writing,on one particularteaching research of appreciation of English arts and cultivation of humanistic quality, and onInternet English teaching, English education reformation and self-examination. Meanwhile, inorder to meet the needs of society, some English teaching forms, such as remote education,correspondence education, off-the-job education and self-study of examination education, aredirected at adults. These adult English teaching forms are getting more and more socialattention.


Chapter Two 3L Model and its Theoretical Foundation


The theoretical foundation of this thesis includes classic theories of teaching design,Self-directed Learning Theory and Learning Community Theory. The latter two theories areselected because the characteristics of the experimental subject and relevant adult teachingtheories should be considered. Learning Community Theory could have a great effect on adultlearners due in part to their characteristics. Thus, the writer makes detailed study and analysisin this part. As for the Instruction-Leaming-Facilitation model, an overview of its basicinformation is given in this part,too.


2.1 Instruction-Learning-Facilitation Model of Shanghai Television University
The Instruction-Leaming-Facilitation Model is also called 3L Model which is a modelformed through long-term and modem remote open education in Shanghai TelevisionUniversity. This model can be described as a three-dimensional teaching model, which appliesmodem information technology, centers on learners' self-study, sets the premise that educatoris the guider of learning, and supports multiple media teaching resources and interactivemeans as facilitation, Liu Wenfu (2004) believes that setting the premise of educator as theguider of learning indicates that the main function of educator is to guide learning process andenlighten thinking. It includes three main areas: goal leading, centralized guidance andindividual guidance." The corresponding subject to implement that is the educator. Themeaning of self-study is that learners with certain guidance and support complete the learningprocess mainly by themselves. So,in this part, the corresponding subject is learners.Self-study includes three levels: autonomous design, autonomous research and autonomousdevelopment. Multiple media teaching resources and interactive means emphasize theimportance and necessity of information technology environment. They include resourcefacilitation, learners' mutual-help and service assistance (Liu Wenfu, 2004: 19).
