摘要:In view of these problems, based on a self-made small corpus of Sino-American Compositions of Shared Topics, the thesis attempts to conduct a comparative and contrastive research on breadth and depth of productive vocabulary knowledge in writings by Chinese learners with high English level and their American counterparts.

1 Introduction
In this chapter, a brief description of the study is made first, followed by an explanation of necessity of the research and then the chapter ends with an overall outline of the study.
1.1 A brief description of the study
Based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of data from corpus of Sino-American Compositions of Shared Topics (Zhou Linshun, Michael H. I'rosser. 2003). a research-targeted writing book which collects English writings of shared topics mostly from College English Test band 4 and band 6 by Chinese English teachers and students versus American counterparts, this thesis attempted to make a comprehensive study on breadth and depth of productive vocabulary in Sino-American Compositions of Shared "hopics. The theoretical framework on which the research is mainly based on is the vocabulary knowledge theories by Richard(1976) and Nation (1990), major contents of which are further divided into practically measurable indicators in corpus linguistics so that a corpus-based method could be employed to make this study more feasible and reliable.
1.2 Research background
Though vocabulary is an essential building block of language (Schmitt, Schmitt&Clapham, 2001)}'1, the (field of vocabulary research had been anything but a neglected comer and not received enough attention until the 1980s. Since then, especially with the increasing development of corpus linguistics supported by computer technologies, studies on lexicology have seen a new surge in various aspects. Among a sizeable portion of research on vocabulary conducted during the past thirty decades, only a few studies have concentrated on the development of and measurement of vocabulary knowledge. In the fields of foreign representative studies on breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge, Yoshida(1978) and Palmberg(1987) investigated productive vocabulary knowledge of ,lapanese and Swedish English learners based on methods ohcasc study and tests.
