1.3 An Overview of the Thesis
There are six parts in this thesis. Every part has its own units. The first part is thecontext of the recent development of ESBP. Through the introduction we canunderstand the aim to study this subject and its significance. The second part is theTheoretical Background; it is the theoretical basis for this study. Then, the NeedsAnalysis is one of the most important parts in this paper. Without it, ESBP would notbe what it should be; it is only through making needs analysis that the course goalsand objectives can be clarified. Then is the introduction of teaching methods, thecorrect and useful teaching methods are the key point in the course study. The nextstep is to make or select an appropriate syllabus to ensure that the special needs aresatisfied. Forth, The Syllabus is also the key point of this course. This course speciallymeasures the body for the commercial figure to have custom-made. According to theneeds analysis, for the requirement of the trainee, the design will decide: the mostsuitable type of syllabus and teaching methodologies; appropriate of existing businessEnglish materials; the location, the timetable, inspection. Then the last part is theevaluation, without it, we can't see the affects of this course. The practical issue is used to consider the practical considerations. The last part is some suggestions forbusiness English course of university. I hope these suggestions will help the universityteachers have a reform for the business English course, and design a practical andusefiil course for the students.


Chapter Two Theoretical Background


2.1 ESP
ESP came into being in the 1960s; Halliday, Mcintosh and Stevens first gave thedefinition to ESP in 1964, "ESP refers to English for civil servants; for policemen; forofficials of law; for dispensers and nurses; for specialists in agriculture; for engineersand fitters." Then aot of scholars have defined the term. Such as Munby(l 978,22):"ESP courses are those where the syllabus and materials are determined in allessentials by the prior analysis of the communication needs of the learner. " Mackayand Mountford(l978,22): "ESP is generally used to refer to the teaching of Englishfor a clearly utilitarian purpose. This purpose is usually defined with reference tosome occupational requirement, for example, for international telephone operators,civil airline pilots, etc., or vocational training programs, for example, for hotel andcatering staff, technical trades, etc., or some academic or professional study, forexample, engineering, medicine, law, etc." Hutchinson &Waters' (1987, 19):"ESP isan approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method arebased on the learner's reason for learning." Robinson, Pauline C" ed. HywelColeman(l989,398) describes ESP as a type of ELT(English Language Teaching ) anddefines it as: "Goal-oriented language learning." Horace, a faithful follower of Ciceroand a famous lyricist? studied translation from the perspective of art and recommendsa natural style in literary creation and translation.
