Chapter One – Introduction:

Background:


Increasingly, organizations transact business in a complex world that is characterized by rapid changes that in turn are affecting the way organization used to chase their long-term goals and objectives. The key to performance in such complex world is to follow an open system where the organization could adapt its strategies according to the changing market dynamics . Organizations that change its strategy according to the changing market dynamics are usually better paid off in the long-run. However, those organizations that did not make the desired adjustments in the organization’s strategy may find it extremely difficult to continue its success for longer as different environmental factors will pose threats to the basic survival of the business organization. Adaptation is the most widely used strategy where the organisation implements change management strategies that in turn enable a business concern to better chase its long-term goals and objectives. 

Nigerian Port Authority (NPA hereafter), the organization that has been given the authority to manage the port operation of Nigeria is the subject matter of this authority, which serves as regulatory authority as well as manage the cargo operation of the business organization.   Nigeria has many ports that include Lagos Port Complex, Calabar Port, Delata Port, River Port, Onne Port and Port Harcourt. Until 2005, the organization was enjoying a wholly owned government utility that was serving the country, however in Feb 2005, the government decided to change the status of the organization to that of landlord model where the organization was given under the management of public-private partnership. Although, this was the change management initiative that the government undertaken to ensure that the organisation perform its stated functions effectively, the fact is that the organization has been encountering different weaknesses that in turn has necessitated that the organisation should pursue a change management strategy that could enable the organization to better chase its goals and objectives. The dissertation on hand is an important in this regard where a change management strategy has been designed for the organization taking into consideration various difficulties that the organization is encountering during the recent past. The dissertation is based on data on both primary and secondary data for which different data sources has been used that in turn has enabled the writer of this paper to better chase its long-term goals and objectives. 

Research Rationale:

Change strategy could be termed as one of the most complex strategy that a business organization usually carried out. This is due to the fact that unlike other types of growth related strategies, the change management usually involved altering the status quo which is usually contested across the organization. Members of the organization in order to protect their own long-term goals and objectives may start using the organization’s power and political games . Due to this reason they may develop various impediments that in turn may limit the implementation of the change management strategy and the value that could be derived from such strategy.
