The History Of Globalisation

For this course we had to write a paper consisting of 5000-6000 words on the topic ‘globalisation’. In order to do so, we had to write a paper based on an existing article from which you can find the reference in the short biography at the end. In addition to the summary of the article we also had to give our own comments on this topic, which you can find after the summary.

Introduction

Imagine a typical African family, in a typical African house in the midst of a poor African country. The father is working day and night in order to provide food and shelter for his family. He works on the fields earning little money, just to buy some food for his family consisting of a wife and 6 children. The work he does is tiring and endless, but the few pennies he earns, keep him going. The family can’t afford their father turning ill, so he keeps fighting, no matte what. Every day he gets up, walks to the fields bear-footed, wearing nothing but a green t-shirt and a black short. In the meantime, his wife is in charge of the 6 children. She is wearing a yellow ‘dress” and an orange bandana. Like the whole family is depending on their father, the youngest child is depending on its mother’s milk in order to survive. She gets help from her mother, a middle aged woman, wearing the many scars of a hard life. Her face does not resemble her age, but she refuses to lose her smile, the last symbol of hope. They are living in a house built out of mud, clay, sticks and leaves. In the parents’ room there is a mattress with an old blanket, whereas the children’s room consists of nothing more than two sheets for 6 children. The family struggles and barely manages to get by. Because of the small earnings of the father and a couple of chickens they own, this family barely has two small meals a day. During one of these small meals, the father’s cell phone rings…

The year is 2011, welcome to globalization.
