The definition of success for this report is any improvement in supplier performance in the field of quality, delivery, cost or technology which improves the ability of the buying firm to compete in the market. (Novak, 2008)

Next Chapter will present a hypothesis model that is developed mainly from an integration of the bodies of literature discussed in the chapter and interview with several supplier developments professional. In addition the hypothesis to be tested is presented and discussed (Easton, 2000).

This chapter will discuss the goal of this thesis and hypothesis development procedures. The main aim of the thesis was to study the data in order to verify several hypotheses related to supplier development success factors. Hypotheses were based on literature reviews and interviews of supplier development managers.

Interviews

Six supplier development professionals were interviewed. Interviews were conducted to learn about critical factors leading to success for supplier development projects. The list of professionals interviewed is provided in the Table 1: Interviewees for hypothesis development. Interviewees were selected with utmost care that had at least experience of 3 years in supplier development programs and managed at least three supplier development programs. Interviewees were having a strong knowledge of supplier development programs. Also they had diverse experience with different supplier firm.

Interview questions were to the point and were concerned with what critical factors supplier development professional can relate with success of supplier development programs. These interviews took place on the phone. Similar set of critical factors for success were obtained after interviewing. Interviewees were asked regarding the supplier development projects they carried out followed by asking their opinion for the most significant contributors to supplier development program success or failure (Tamir, 2008). These questions were open questions and interviewees responded meticulously and carefully. A list of several factor were obtained which according to Interviewees were main contributors for supplier development.

Research Variables

Some of the buying firms are more content than others with the results of their supplier development programs. Generally every buying firm focuses on several factors while implementing supplier development program, which guide to success in some cases and failure in some.
