摘要:高职英语教师在制定教学计划和教学目标以及教师评价方面自主能力较低,而在开发和整合教学材料方面则较高。在教师及学生评价方面教师表现出的自主性也不高。学术能力情况调查结果表明,教师的自主科研意识较高,但在学术活动和科研成果方面却不尽如人意。

ld be more autonomous in evaluating peer teachers and their ownteaching.The results of the study also show that teachers’ understanding in teacherautonomy can mainly attributed into three parts, firstly, autonomy is an extension ofteachers’ self-consciousness, after accumulations, it will turn into autonomy, thus,autonomous teachers should possess the awareness of being autonomous. Secondly,based on this consciousness, teachers should possess the ability to choose what theyneed during teaching and doing research; this is also how autonomy is viewed. Lastly,autonomy of teachers is what the teachers have in their hands, the rights to achieveeffective classroom teaching and promote their professional development.Different from other studies, the present paper intends to take the academicautonomy into consideration. As far as the author is concerned, teachers’ autonomycan also be reflected in the aspect of being a researcher. To be an autonomous teacher,being autonomous in academic research is also a crucial factor in developinginnovation. Similar to other elements that influence teacher autonomy, academicautonomy plays a pivotal part in achieving teacher professional development. In thepresent study, teachers show high levels of autonomy in academic researches, nomatter in their beliefs, awareness or their actual behaviors, but some of the teacherscould not show enough academic competence due to the limits of time or conditions,even though they are fully aware of the importance.All the factors being considered, approaches of conducting autonomousteaching should be put forward and practiced so as to achieve professionaldevelopment for vocational college English teachers.


5.2 Limitations and suggestions for future research

First of all, the number of the subjects is not very large since this is a case study,only one college is investigated. Besides, even though all the teachers surveyed teachthe same grade, use the same text books during the same period of one semester, notall of them are full time teachers, some of them are administrative staff and also teachEnglish class as other teachers, therefore, their individual beliefs and ideas may bedifferent.Besides, the duration of the research is not as long as it is expected. The authoronly conducted the research in the second semester of the learning year, so some ofthe facts mentioned by the teachers in the interview are not completely shown to theauthor. If given more time, the whole picture may be better-rounded.The research therefore is suggested in its effort to investigate whether teachersperforming high level of autonomy or not has correlation effects due to their age,gender or professional titles. What’s more, further investigation may view student’sinfluence on how teachers exercise autonomy, as well as the effects to the recipientsbrought by the high efficacy of achieving autonomy in different contexts.
