2.2 Trilingual study aboard
Hammarbery (1998) studied in roles of LI (English) and L2 (German) in L3 (Swedish)production and acquisition. His findings confirm that knowledge of prior L2s may influencethe L3 learning process. However, the findings also provide evidence that the learner'sbackground language may interact in different ways in different stages of the speakingprocess. What is striking is that the construction of the lexemes is often influenced by anexternal supplier language, mostly L2 German.Jean-Marc Dewade (1998) presented his study of trilingual (Dutch \ French \ English)university students' language variations. His findings indicate that the interaction betweenthree languages on the language mode continuum is closely related to the degree of formalityand interindividual and intraindividual variations are considerable because of a range ofvariables such as the proficiency of the interlanguages, the frequency of use outside theclassroom, the accuracy of use and sociolinguistic competence.Ringbom (2001) presented the third language data from translations of English wordsfrom learners coming from Swedish and Finnish language school who acquire English as athird language. He made a distinction between transfer of form and transfer of meaning andindicated that the first and the second language shoulder a different responsibility in these twotypes of transfer. The data confirm that typology plays an important role in transfer of formbut a minor role in transfer of meaning in third language acquisition.De Angelis and Larry Selinker (2001) described their investigation of two subtypes ofinterlanguage transfer: lexical interlanguage transfer and morphological interlanguage transfer.It was assumed that all linguistic systems presented in the speaker's mind may besimultaneously interacting and competing in interlanguage production but may not primarilybe based on the interaction between the native language and the target language.
