udents meet the requirement of all kinds of skillsprescribed in the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Colleges and Universitiesafter they have finished junior stage of studying English in college or university. (2) tocheck the students’ comprehensive ability of using all kinds of skills and the degree ofmastering grammar structure and vocabulary usage. (Syllabus for TEM4 2004:3)The new teaching syllabus and testing syllabus are 2000 version and 2004version by now. The increasing number of candidates in China along with theextensive use of test scores stimulates a tendency in China that many English majors’careers or education decisions are affected. Before the introduction of syllabuses inthe following parts, it is necessary to introduce the format of TEM4 writing.


1.2.1 Teaching Syllabus for English Majors
TEM4 is designed to check students’ English abilities according to the relevantteaching syllabus. The first teaching syllabus at the foundation stage implemented in1989, then it reached a higher stage in 1990, and till now the former two werecombined into one in 2000. “Their primary purpose is to give teachers andeducational deciders a guideline, for example it may be useful on the development ofEnglish Language Teaching (ELT) curriculum, ELT programme and ELT materials invarious universities across China” (Zou Shen, 1997, p.1). While, the aim of the newteaching syllabus is not only to cultivate English majors who should be at once goodat English language, familiar with English language country culture, but also fosterEnglish majors to apply their language well in professions like teachers, entrepreneurs,translators, interpreters and experts in the fields which involve English. In addition,the new syllabus also lists new requirements in each language skills. Therequirements of writing in level four in teaching syllabus is shown in Appendix Ⅰ.


Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Theoretical Concerns of Writing
Language is a system used by human beings for the expression of meaning incommunication. Though writing is considered as the secondary media ofcommunication, writing seems to be as important as speaking for “writing makes anexact man.”Writing is “an act that takes place within a context, that accomplishes a particularpurpose, and that is appropriately shaped for its intended audience” (Hamp-Lyons andKroll 1997:8). It is, by nature, a communicative act: “We write mainly tocommunicate with other humans” (Hayes 1996:5).Generally speaking, research can be done on the nature of writing from thefollowing three aspects: writing as a written text, writing as a process of composing atext, and writing as a social-cognitive activity.The product view regards the act of writing as a process of encoding throughemploying skills at various levels. The written products were seen as an autonomousobject, where the various elements were coherently and accurately put togetheraccording to a rule-governed system. Before the writer encodes in his/her own mind,he/she has to establish a main idea. First, he/she uses letters to form words, and then,makes sentence with these words according to correct grammatical rules. Next, thewriter writes a paragraph with these sentences. At last, a whole article is finished byarranging some paragraphs.
