Conclusion


For more than half century, we can not deny that language transfer has been one of themost controversial subjects in second language acquisition. The researchers have reached abalanced point that the role of transfer in second language learning process is toacknowledge and positive transfer and negative transfer are of equal importance. Without abetter understanding of transfer, we can not have a better understanding of the role ofmother tongue in second language learning, not to mention improving the quality of thesecond language teaching. Based on an integrated account of theories of language transfer,the thesis focuses on understanding the nature of language transfer by doing a case studyon negative transfer of mother tongue in junior middle school.After collecting the data and analyzing the speech errors, the author found that thelinguistic and cultural differences between the Chinese and English contribute most of theerrors made in English speaking process. When speaking English,the students can beaffected by the negative transfer in various aspects: phonology,lexis, syntax andpragmatics, etc. And furthermore, the general results of the pretest and post test show usthat the most junior middle school students are aware of many differences between Englishand Chinese.
The author hopes that the study may help junior middle school students and theirteachers to have a better understanding of mother tongue transfer in speaking of English.And the author also hopes that the advice can help the students avoid negative transfer. Theauthor's purpose of the thesis is to help junior middle school students to leam English welland speak English fluently and correctly. However, it is worthy to be pointed out that thereis still a long way to go as to how to apply the positive transfer to the oral English teachingand how to design the appropriate teaching tasks and training so that the students' oralEnglish could be further improved.
