Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Definition of Feedback
In the 1970, some researchers had raised different feedback definitions. For example in the humanperformance’ context, Ramaprasad (1983) defined feedback as follows: the information is given to shortenthe gap between the learners’ present level and the prospective level of the target language. The feedbackwas defined by Bulter and Winne (1995) as the message that students got about the acquisition process andachievement results. From the point of Sommer’ (1982) view, learners who are provided with feedback canmotivate learners’ learning of English, what’ more, it can improve the skills of English writing. Lalande(1982) defined feedback as that the process used to tell the language learner about what the instrumentalresponse is true or false. Keh (1990) gave a much more wide definition about feedback, relating to thewriting, “...input from a reader to a writer with the effects of providing information to the writer forrevision”. It means the teacher ought to give specific instruction when students hand in their writingassignment. It points out that the teacher who have read student’s writing can give suggestions andcomments on the writing, even can put forward his own questions based on the writing. Through feedback,the writer can know the errors and shortcomings in the writing. Ur (1998) held that during the Englishlanguage teaching, feedback based upon the certain task refers to the returning information to the learner inorder to improve and promote students’ learning.Actually, as for the term “feedback”, many definitions from varied aspects had been given. We canconclude the general points of feedback. In light of writing, feedback is regarded as a kind of input inwhich the teacher provides information with regard to writing composed by learners. In the sphere offoreign language teaching, feedback is conventionally deemed to be a prerequisite condition for thelanguage learning. During the process of the learning, the learner is supplied with a concept standard tocontrast this achievement and guide him to the target way in a proper way.

2.2 Classification of Feedback
Feedback derives from the process approach in the teaching of English writing, which considers the writing as a cognitive process of discovery, accommodation and assimilation and stresses students'initiative. It can also active the classroom atmosphere, arouse students' enthusiasm of writing and developtheir thinking, to enable students to understand their writing process.
