摘要:The child heard a coordinated sentence and wondered: On children’s difficulty in understanding coordination and relative clauses with crossing dependencies

As such, these sentences might suggest a new look at whether it is Wh-movement (with crossing) that is problematic for
children or rather crossing dependencies in general. If crossing dependencies pose a comprehension problem for young
children, we expect children to have difficulties understanding coordination structures like (2) as well. To our knowledge, the
comprehension of this structure by children has never been tested.
Crucially, not all coordinated structures are expected to be problematic. Coordinated structures without a dependency
(The girl smiled and the boy kissed grandma) should not be problematic, and neither should coordinated structures with a
dependency that does not involve crossing of an argument (such as The girl danced and smiled).
In this study, we will thus compare coordinated sentences with crossing dependencies to coordinated sentences without
a dependency, and to coordination with a dependency but without crossing.2 We will also compare them to sentences
derived by Wh-movement with and without crossing dependencies.
