Chapter One
INTRODUCTION
More and more researchers get interested in lexical chunks and make studies of it.Based on previous studies,the present study aims to explore the differences of lexical chunks used by learners with different writing proficiency in three aspects:the differences in type,frequency and generating pattern.
1.1 Background
Lexical chunks play an important role in the English language learning.Previous studies(e.g.,Hakuta,1974;Wong Fillmore,1976;Peter,1983;Lewis,1993;Wray, 1999;Nattinger and DeCarrico,2000;Wray and Pekins,2000)have shown that lexical chunks can help learners save efforts in the process of speaking and writing and enhance learners’level of idiomaticity and fluency,thus facilitating their language learning and use.
Learners’use of lexical chunks can facilitate their EFL writing.It can save the effort of processing and improve the accuracy.Researchers(e.g.,Becker,1975;Pawley and Syder,1983;Ellis,1996;Wray,2002)hold that lexical chunks are stored and used as a whole without any analysis,so they can free the learners from the process of generation and save time for word selection.Learners can focus on the content and the structure of the compositions rather than the selection of words,thus they are more likely to produce high-quality compositions.On the other hand,lexical chunks are more authentic language materials which can help make the learners output more idiomatic.English language consists of a large number of lexical chunks,so using lexical chunks in writing can not only save learners’effort of processing but also ensure the accuracy and idiomaticity of the language use.Because of the important role lexical chunks play in EFL writing,it is worthwhile to conduct research on it.
