nguage transfer isincomplete. The present study is a tentative probe into the negative transfer in Chineselearners' English writing providing some evidence for markedness theory and enrichingour understanding of the phenomenon of negative transfer in writing.
Besides theoretical importance, this study can help improve L2 teaching andlearning, especially English writing. As is known to all, a lot of errors arising in Chineselearners' English compositions have become a burden to teachers in the course of writingrevision. On this account, it is quite necessary to summarize the common errorsespecially those transfer errors which can be corrected by teaching students to compareconsciously between Chinese and English. English teachers need such a study to find thefrequent errors and their sources so that they can do remedial work to prevent thoseerrors' occurrences. English learners also need such a study to show them ways to avoidnegative transfer in English writing. Through careful examination and in-depth analysisin this study, learners can know about the transfer errors in detail. If they pay additionalattention to the difficult points which will be shown in this thesis, they can at leastovercome some obvious tendency to be influenced by mother tongue in English writing.


2. Literature Review


In this chapter, the definition of language transfer is presented, the related theoriesabout it is introduced in detail and relevant researches at home and abroad is discussed.


2.1 Language transfer
This section is devoted to the origin, the definition, and the classification of transfer.In addition, three views on language transfer will be summarized.


2.1.1 Origin of transfer
The word transfer is derived from the Latin word transferre. Trans means across orover, and ferre means to bear. Thus transferre means to carry over. According toWebster's Third New World International dictionary (1986: 2427),transfer means "tocarry-over or generalization of learned responses from one type of situation to another,especially the application in one field of study or effort of knowledge, skill, power, orability acquired in another". Transfer is originally a terminology in learning psychology.It's fundamental to all learning, which involves carrying over previous learning to similaror new situations. When it comes to language learning, language transfer is a kind oflearning psychological theory in second language acquisition.
