Conclusion


This study examines the negative transfer of the learners' mother tongue on theirEnglish writing. We attempt to identify the errors, select the errors which are caused bythe influence of Chinese and analyze the source of them. The results can give someimplications to both English teachers and learners. Although the author has made greatefforts to better the study, some limitations can't be avoided.The sample is very small and the proficiency of the subjects is at the same languagelevel. So it can hardly represent all the cases. As for the instrument, the genres of thecompositions are expository and argumentative writing. There can be more genres anddiverse topics. Besides,the process of data collection was manipulated after class, so itmay not demonstrate the subjects' real competence. Moreover, the reliability of the erroranalysis may not be fully guaranteed because the judgment of transfer errors can,t avoidsubjective viewpoints, though the author has tried her best to be as objective as possible.In addition, this study doesn't cover the discourse errors resulting from negative transferfrom Chinese because their frequency can't be counted.
Future research should try to avoid the limitations of this study. The sample shouldbe randomly selected from different levels of learners and the number of subjects shouldbe as large as possible. Besides interview, questionnaires can be used to survey the use ofmother tongue in English writing. The compositions can include more topics anddifferent genres. The subjects can be asked to write the compositions in class within alimited period and hand them in on the spot. Authoritative people can be asked to do theerror analysis to ensure the reliability. Furthermore, negative transfer in terms of lexical,syntactic and discourse should be analyzed so that it will be more comprehensive.Besides the research of negative transfer in writing, other topics can be probed into.Further study can be made to explore different kinds of transfer in diverse forms of learner language. For example, the research of negative transfer in speaking, the study ofpositive transfer in speaking and writing, etc.
