Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Definition and features of cover letters
Cover letters are also called letters of job-application or face letters, which are perfect vehicles fortelling potential employers why the applicants are specifically interested in their companies and jobopenings (VanAlstyne, 1990). Generally speaking, there are two types of cover letters: specific cover letterand general cover letter. The former is directed at specific person, a position and specific company, whichpersonally addresses the company’s needs. It also sends a positive message to the potential employer thatone is truly interested because one takes the time to perfect an individual letter. The latter is often addressedto Dear Employer, and emphasizes the applicant’s qualifications in the hope that a position will beavailable to utilize his or her skills. So far, three influential researchers abroad have conducted researches on job application letters, twoby Bhatia (1993) and one by Henry and Roseberry (2001). Bhatia said “generally one tends to find apredominant reference to the needs of the potential employer, always implying that the candidate can fulfillthose needs” (1993:63). Cover letters belong to business letters, which serve as self- introduction ofapplicant and demonstrate the applicant’s writing skills and abilities to communicate. As to thecommunicative goals of cover letters, the preliminary and direct one is to gain the opportunities ofinterview, and the final and indirect one is to obtain the jobs.
Cover letters should introduce the applicants’ qualifications and skills truthfully and precisely so as tomeet the employers’ specific job needs. The introduction should include paid career, personal evaluation, volunteer work, hobbies, abilities and life experiences. The language of cover letters should be direct, politeand correct. The words selected in cover letters must precisely convey the meaning without being wordy andpedantic. What is more, cover letters should be persuasive and avoid the use of rhetoric devices, asemployers are looking for facts, not rhetoric. According to Cai Jigang (1998), the structure of cover lettersconsists of three parts, the structure is as follows.
