1.2 Significance of the Study
The use of film to aid language teaching plays an innate learning strength of the students asthey are robust familiar with the visual media. The diverse society requires that the students beeducated in an all-round way, and film is a particularly effective teaching tool, principally becausevisual culture is a dominant aspect of modem society. Indeed, modem students are immersed in ourvisual society and navigate the format effectively and efficiently as they grow up in the developingsociety.The significance of teaching language aided by films is multifold. Firstly, we can analyze thevalue of the film. Film is an audio-visual art. It creates images, narrates stories, expresses feelings,states philosophy and attracts the audience by its sound, color and moving pictures: especially thelatter. To appreciate a film is to have insight into the infinite content of the finite form. Anappreciator has to go through perceiving and comprehending processes, which then lead toemotionally and associatively thinking activity. Film appreciation is a sort of reprocessing ofartistic works, a sort of recreation. It's a further involvement and exploration of aesthetics (Han -Xiaoling & Zhang Hong, 2002). Therefore, we can experience the high artistic value that isexpressed in the film. Secondly, from the language learning point of view, films can help studentsimprove their pronunciation and intonation, pick up idiomatic use of words and phrases, assimilatefor studying and living abroad or international communication at home since films provide a greatsource of words, and with the help of context cues in the movies, those passive words can easily bemade active and productive, and the lag between comprehension and production will be shortened.


Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Understanding English Language Teaching Aided by Films
In China, where a huge population dwarfs the small number of native foreign languagespeakers (whose influence is like spraying perfume on the ocean), learning the common languagelike English is very important in order to get into globalization trends smoothly. Research hasshown that film imagery helps ESL students deal successfully with sophisticated discipline-basetexts, and offers them a visual model for various rhetorical modes of written discourse such ascomparison and contrast, cause and effect, and argumentation (Kasper and Singer 1997). Film canaid language learners in several ways. It can provide the relevant content information with agraphic illustration and bring them into authentic natural language environment. In languageteaching classroom, the film sequences can be isolated and even replayed. Teacher can organize thestudents to watch in many parts and enable them to clarify meaning and discover new elements toexamine in details through classroom discussions. The film appeals to the audience's emotions, sothat language connotations will be shown clearly through the voice intonation and body language.Therefore, making a good use of films to aid language teaching is really important.
