Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
One of the most significant of our times is the "opening up" of China and its increasingintegration with the world economy and society. China entered the WTO in 2001, hosted theOlympic Games in 2008, and held the World Expo successfully in 2010. These are just three of themost obvious manifestations of our historic trend. Less obvious but equally significant are themillion-and-one daily encounters between Chinese citizens and the outside world ―whether in theform of business trips, recreational visits and tours, overseas studies schedules or official visits. Allof the activities have changed our lives. In order to meet the requirements of the society, and adaptourselves to the development of market economy and the challenge of the new technologyrevolution, we should put such energy into English study as it is the most widely used language inthe world. With the arrival of twenty-first century, our Education has been flourishing more than everbefore, the teaching equipment has been updated continuously, the teaching methods have beenimproved naturally, and multimedia-assisted teaching has become an irresistible trend. As a foreignlanguage teacher, one of the greatest challenges is that the foreign language context is not usedauthentically. Thus, learners do not have many natural opportunities to be exposed to the languageor use it in authentic interaction. Some scholars have done many efforts to research the useful wayto learn English more effectively. Then using feature films in language classes has come up.Feature films, along with other authentic materials, are contextually rich sources of authenticmaterial which can be exploited in the language classroom. Through films learners see how peoplecommunicate in real life in different conversational contexts since films "help bring the outsideworld into the classroom" (Tomlin, 1986: 9).
Films are valuable teaching resources in language classes, especially when there are fewopportunities for students to expose themselves to English in real-life contexts. Traditionalteaching methods are teacher-centered, and the main form of the teaching is always that the teacherexplains the language points and the student listen and take notes at the same time. It is likely tomake students lose interests of learning English. But an English class aided by films would bedifferent. Advantages of such a class are pointed out by King(2002.510) as follows:Learning English through films compensates for many of the shortcoming in the EFL learningexperience by bringing language to life. It is a refreshing learning experience for students whoneed to take a break from note learning of long lists of English vocabulary and soporific drillpractices. Their encounters with realistic situations and exposure to the living language provide adimension that is missing in textbook-oriented teaching.
