ted Masters’theses from the University of Botswana, Akindele (2009) examined the problems in theirwritings; Cheng Mingfang (2008a) examined LRs of 100 dissertations and found thefour- element structure of LR.; She (2008b) further conducted another study on Ph.D.dissertations’ LRs in natural science and social science in order to probe into the genericsimilarities and differences; Zhu Yanran and Jin Jin (2010) made a contrastive analysisof the textual structure and linguistic feature of the LR in 60 research papers abroad andhome; Gao Guizhen, Liu Fang and Yu Fengjun (2011) explored the generic features ofLRs in the English theses produced by Chinese masters.
It can be found the above studies either focus on the LRs of English-native speakersor addressed on doctoral dissertations. Since recent years, there are more and morestudents pursing master’s degree. Therefore this study makes a comparative analysis onLRs of masters’ theses, aiming to provide some practical and useful guidance both forChinese learners and English-native speakers to write qualified LRs.

Chapter Two Literature Review

With an introduction of key terminologies related to the thesis, the chapter aims toprovide a review of the background of present study. Firstly, concepts about M.A. thesis& LR, genre, as well as moves and steps are sequentially presented; the second sectionmainly reviews genre analysis, and introduces the theoretical foundation-Swales’ CARSmodel. The third section is an overall review of previous research on LR. Finally, thischapter concludes with a summary.

2.1 Terminology
Before detailed discussion, those key terms related to the study are illustrated,including M.A. thesis, LR, genre, moves and steps.

2.1.1 M.A. Thesis and LR
M.A. thesis is a major product of academic programmes in postgraduate Education.As a kind of academic writing, it is a long piece of writing on a certain topic for a masterdegree. It is a synthesis of variable parts such as abstract, introduction, LR, methodology,discussion and conclusion. Since 1980s, an increasing amount of research has beendevoted to various sections of theses, including abstract (Samraj, 2005), introduction(Swales, 1981, 1990; Samraj, 2002), result (Brett, 1994; Williams, 1999; Yang & Allison,2003), discussion (Hopkin & Dudley-Evan, 1988; Holmes, 1997; Peacock, 2002),acknowledgement (Hyland, 2004) ，which has contributed to learning and writing aqualified thesis.Among various parts of a thesis, initially, it should be admitted that a review of theliterature is important because without it, you will not acquire an understanding of yourtopic, of what has already been done on it, how it has been researched, and what the keyissues are. The review is therefore an important part of your academic study-of becomingan expert in the field.
