摘要:Peer feedback of students’ composition, as a complimentary method of teacher feedback, has greatsignificance in tertiary education in china because of the large number of students in each class. The hugeclass size which is the result of the expansion of college enrollment has made the English teachers’ joblaborious.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Research orientation
The present study was on the grounds of collaborative learning theory, process approach to writingand Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development theory. It investigated whether peer feedback could be usedas a complimentary method of teacher feedback and help Chinese non-English majors to improve theiroverall English writing proficiency.

1.2 Aim of the research

1.2.1 Importance of English writing
English is becoming more and more important in the process of our country’s tremendousinternational changes. As an international language, we need English to get the latest information from allover the world; we need English to communicate and exchange ideas with foreign friends and we need it toget promotion in our career. The fast development of our country requires Chinese students to possesscomprehensive language ability. That is possessing four basic English skills (listening, speaking, readingand writing). Among which the ability to write in English is the most difficult one.Wang Chumin et al. (2000) indicated writing was a form of written communication to express ones’ideas which involved the integrated use of other skills such as listening, speaking, and reading. Expressyourself clearly in writing can be a slow and painful process. When you write, you should apply thevocabularies, grammars, sentences that you have learned in your writing. This process can help students toreinforce what they have learned. But writing seems to be the most difficult task for students to master. AsNunan (2001) said in his workAmong the four basic skills of English learning, writing is the last in sequence but should by no means be the least inimportance. In terms of skills, producing a coherent, fluent, extended piece of writing is probably the most difficult thingthere is to do in language. It is something most native speakers never master.” (Nunan, 2001, p. 271)


1.2.2 Present problems in English writing course
Writing seems to be the most difficult part among the four basic language skills, and it is also theweakest part, especially for those college students. This situation can be seen from the distribution of scoresin CET 4 and CET 6, compared with listening, reading and grammar, scores gained from writing arerelatively low. Writing is much weaker than other skills in English learning. But both the students and thecollege English teachers don’t take it seriously and often ignore this part in English class. Because for most of the college English teachers, they are often faced with limited class hours and mixed class. For collegestudents, they are often lack of feedbacks and adequate exercises. Those situations make writing a toughtask not only for the college students, but also for the college English teachers.
Another reason that may result in students’ weak writing ability is the teaching method in writinginstruction. Product approach is still the dominated method in the writing class in China, Thisproduct-oriented approach over-emphasis on linguistic accuracy and the final drafts, while the generating ofideas and the organizing of essay are not taken into consideration.
