摘要:This paper, based on the constructivism theory, humanism theory and lifelong learningtheory, aims to make an investigation on the current situation of English autonomous learningin HVC, probing into its existing problems and analyzing its influencing factors.
Introduction
0.1 Background
American futurist Toffler once said, “The future of illiteracy is no longer illiterate people,but did not learn how to learn.” The key of learning to learn is to cultivate students’autonomous learning ability. New College English Curriculum Requirements enacted by theMinistry of Education in 2007 explicitly pointed out that, the higher colleges should reformthe teaching mode so as to promote students’ individualized learning and develop theirautonomous learning ability. This new teaching model should enable students to choosesuitable materials and methods for learning, acquire the instruction of learning strategies, andgradually improve their autonomous learning ability. According to Basic Requirements ofVocational English Teaching, the purpose of English teaching is to train practical talents inorder to adapt to the needs of the society in future. The future society requires people to keeplearning for their whole lifetime. Half of college education comes from the student. All thissuggests that the task of education is no longer just transmitting knowledge and skills. What ismore important is to develop students’ practical application of language ability andautonomous learning ability which can lay a solid foundation for lifelong learning anddevelopment in a learning society.

0.2 Significance
Firstly, this research can improve the quality of English teaching in HVC. It is animportant research subject for English teachers to improve the current situation of highervocational English teaching, and to perfect foreign language teaching and learning. Studieshave shown that the academic achievements of those who are good at autonomous learningare generally higher than those who are not (Pang Weiguo, 2003). The cultivation of students’English autonomous learning ability is able to mobilize students’ enthusiasm and initiative tolearn English so as to radically improve the current situation of higher vocational Englishteaching. Secondly, it is conducive to future development of HVCS. In order to survive in thisspeedy and competitive society, students must learn how to study independently, namely, tomaster the ability of autonomous learning to obtain the knowledge and skills that needs inwork and life. Thirdly, this paper can enrich the study of learner autonomy. That autonomouslearning has become a hot issue in the field of education today is because it is not only thegoal of education, but means of educational practice (Bound, 1988:17). Many scholarsfocused on doing research in basic education and undergraduate universities. The study on thespecial group, higher vocational college students, was not enough. This empirical research canmake up for this deficiency, provide some Reference for effective English teaching practices,offer some suggestions to teachers in English teaching, explore a new English classroomteaching mode, and provide some help for students to be able to constantly improve their ownEnglish proficiency and English academic achievements. Finally, through the application ofasynchronous teaching method in English classroom teaching, the author tries to furtherverify students’ individualized learning and teachers’ asynchronous instructions.
