摘要:Relative clauses which are universal in languages of the world, have uniquesyntactic properties, and are frequent in everyday use of language (Izumi 2003). It hasbeen studied for pedagogical, linguistic and psychological purposes by a considerablenumber of researchers.
Chapter Two Methodology
2.1 Research Questions
As reviewed in the previous chapter,the main purposes of the present study are totestify Regression Hypothesis with English relative clauses and probe into differentvariables affecting language attrition. Based on these purposes,the research questions arepresented as follows:Firstly, what is the attrition sequence of English relative clauses for Chineselearning English as £i second language? Does it follow the prediction of RegressionHypothesis? ’Secondly, among the identified eight factors affecting FL attrition, how do the majorthree of them,namely, proficiency level prior to attrition, time since onset of attrition andgender, affect the attrition of English relative clauses in Chinese context?The second research question could be developed into three sub questions: (1). Howdoes the learners' proficiency level prior to attrition affect their English relative clauseattrition? And to be precise, is there a critical threshold exist in L2 attrition? If so,what isthe critical threshold for Chinese EFL learners? (2).What are the differences of attritionamong people with different time since onset of attrition? (3). Are there any differencesin the English relative clauses attrition between males and females? Can significantgender difference be detected in the attrition of English relative clauses?

2.2 Subjects
In several contributions on language attrition, great emphasis has been put on thefact that attrition processes may be closely linked to certain characteristics of theparticular group of learners under investigation, Berko-Gleason (1982) mentionscognitive style,sex, handedness, birth order within the family and social class,a listwhich is based on acquisition studies. Oxford (1982a: 165) lists "age, general cognitivedevelopmental level, cognitive ability and linguistic skill level" as "extraneous variablespotentially needing control". Ni (2009a; 2009b) summarize eight factors affectinglanguage attrition as proficiency level prior to attrition, time since onset of attrition,gender,exposure to target language, age at onset of language attrition, foreign languageinstruction, affective factors and literacy.
