摘要:The present study is set in the above situation in which academic writing in Englishfor Chinese graduate students of English has been attached great importance to whereasthe actual writing competence and writing results of these graduates are not satisfiedenough.
1. Introduction
1.1 Research background
It is assumed to be a great challenge for English native speakers to writeacademically. They are under the pressure of publication in international journals whichrequires high standard of not only language but also logical thinking and reasoning.However, they are not the only group that has suffered in the process of academic writing.With English becoming the dominant language of international academic journals, thereis a trend for non-native speakers to pursue academic achievements through publicationin international joiraals,leading to growing awareness of the significance of academicwriting in English all over the world (swales, 1990; Giridharan, 2012; Dong,1998;Huang,2010; Bitchener & Basturkmen, 2006).For those non-native speakers, writing academically in a second or foreignlanguage is even tougher,let alone the ESL/EFL graduates who are novice in the field ofacademic research (Bitchener & Basturkraen, 2006; Paltridge, 2002; Aitchison & Lee, 2006;Dong, 1998; Wang & Bakken,2004; Cadman, 1997; Qian & Kxugy-Smolska, 2008).Therefore, for those graduate students whose essential assignment before graduating is towrite an English thesis or dissertation, English academic writing is increasinglysignificant on one hand,but challenging and bxirdensome on the other hand.Distinguished with other types of writing,academic writing process involves notonly "demonstrating knowledge to argue logically and coherently the meaning of theresearch results" (Dong,1998,45). That is to say, ESL/EFL learners have to deal withthe challenges of a new genre. At the same time,as non-native speakers, they are alsofaced with the high requirement of English proficiency,the daunting size of thedocument and the strict standard of the writing text. Therefore, the complex writingprocess of thesis or dissertation becomes the most demanding and formidable task formany graduate students.

1.2 Research objectives and research questions
The present study is set in the above situation in which academic writing in Englishfor Chinese graduate students of English has been attached great importance to whereasthe actual writing competence and writing results of these graduates are not satisfiedenough. This present thesis aims at figuring out the difficulties and challengesencountered by English graduates in their academic writing process. At the same time,itintends to explore the social,institutional and personal factors contributing to thesedifficulties and challenges. Besides, it also aims at finding out what kinds of assistancehas already been provided and what are still expected to be improved, with the purposeof raising some theoretical and practical suggestions to help postgraduates to overcomethe difficulties. Therefore, the major research questions of the present study are:How do English postgraduates experience in their academic writing and what arethe difficulties and challenges they have encountered?
