speak English, there are some “Chinese features” in their pronunciations, which to some extent affects the fluent and practical communication. In terms of English language teaching, three aspects are often claimed to play a critical role, that is, phonetic factor, grammar, and vocabulary. Phonetic factor, as the physical outer of language, is the base for mastering language skills and performing practical communication. Therefore, undoubtedly, phonetic performance is of great significance for language teaching, and in the practical process of English language teaching, rhythm, an aspect of phonetic factor, is often seen as a critical aspect influencing the pronunciation of English learners whose L1 is Mandarin. With the development of English language learning and teaching, the importance of rhythm is gradually paid attention to by linguists and English language teachers who even liken the vowels and consonants to the body of English and the rhythm to the soul of English. Some linguists lay stress on rhythm by claiming that it is not the matter what you are saying; it is the matter how you are saying. In the process of teaching English to students whose L1 is Mandarin, it is not difficult to find that many students can pronounce each English phoneme accurately, nonetheless, when they combine these phonemes to form a word, phrase, or sentence, they tend to have strong accents on syllables, which sounds similar to Chinese style of English.

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 The Definition of Segmental Durations
Human speech is characterized by sloppy and precise articulatory movements with the acoustic speech wave as result. In order to perceive and comprehend this message, the listener not only has to notice the important events, but also has to neglect unimportant distortions. Duration is an important aspect of the message comprehended. Variations in segment duration are important cues of acoustic variability in the realization of linguistically identical units (Nooteboom, 1973). The acoustically based definitions of segmental durations that we and others (see, e.g., Peterson and Lehiste, 1960) have adopted correspond to the closure duration for stops. For fricatives, the durations corresponds to the interval of turbulent frication noise above some threshold (or to changes in the voicing source if no frication energy is visible). For sonorant sequences, the segmental boundary is the half-way point in the formant transitions. (Klatt 1976)
