Chapter Two Literature Review
2.1 Studies on Thematic Structure
The term “theme” was first appeared in the founder of Prague School——Vitem Mathesius’ Functional Sentence Perspective in 1939,but it did not enter the circle of mainstream linguistics at that time until 1960’s. Nowadays, with the unremitting efforts of some scholars at home and abroad, the theory centers on thematic structure has been focused on by various linguistic schools and reached a new high level. The concept of theme and rheme, with a long history, can date back to the Sophists in ancient Greek, and Plato is the first person who posits a binary structure of onoma and rhema equivalent to theme and rheme put forward by successive sholars in some sense. Just as mentioned above, Mathesius is the first one who proposed the theory of theme and expounded the theory from the perspective of known information and unknown information. Then Firbas (1960’s), who is another representative of Prague School, defines theme as the sentence component bearing smallest communicative dynamism.
