In her speeches, Michelle doesn’t use much complicated thematic progression patterns, just several types most frequent used in speech and easy to be understood by students. It indicates that Michelle doesn’t pay more attention on the trivial structure of the speeches. Instead, what she wants to achieve is to grasp the whole speech at a textual level and make her speeches concise and easy to understand.  From  the  aspect  of  the  audience,  they  are  just  middle  school  students  and graduates who are about to start their career. The speeches to them are  more like conversations between a senior and children, which  indicate that Michelle endears herself to the students very much.  In  order  to  achieve  this  purpose,  Michelle  uses  a  large  percent  of  person pronouns to establish an intimate relationship with the students, among which first person  pronouns  and  second  person  pronouns  take  an  overwhelmingly  large percentage compared to third person pronouns, for it is a relationship between two sides——Michelle and the students directly.  As for the choice of markedness and unmarkedness, Michelle chooses the latter one together with the use of person pronouns most of the time to establish an amiable and  easy-going  image.  Based  on the  theory  of  thematic  structure  and  research  on thematic progression pattern, the thesis attempts to find out common features hidden in Michelle Obama’s commencement speeches, and to dig out the methods to deliver speeches  to  achieve  her  communicative  goal,  and  to  provide  some  hints  for  the organization of speeches.
