Chapter Four   Results and Discussion 

4.1 Introduction  

According  to  our  research  design  in  Chapter  One,  we  divide  this  chapter  into three parts. In the first part, we present the results of our investigation in OALD-8，which  includes  the  treatment  of  past  participles  in  OALD-8.  Then  we  carry  out discussion about our result. The first topic is about word-hood of past participles. The second part pays attention to analyzing lexicalization of past participles and multiple word class. In the third part, we discuss social and cultural effects on lexicalization. In the  last  part,  we  put  forth  enlightenment  of  our  research  on  morphology  and lexicography. At the end of this chapter, a brief summary will be given. In our process of research, we have investigated the treatment of past participles in  OALD-8,  including  word  class  categories  which  they  belong.  According  to  our research, in OALD-8, the total number of past participles is 1,001. Among these past participles,  the  number  of  those  that  have  not  been  recorded  in  OALD-8  as independent  entries  is  111,  which  occupy  11.09%.  On  the  other  hand,  the  number  of those  have  been  recorded  in  OALD-8  is  890,  which  take  up  88.91%.  The  detailed information is showed as follows:

Conclusion  

This part is the last part of this paper. It mainly focuses on major findings of this paper, limitations of the study and suggestions for future work. Lexicalization  is  not  an  isolated  phenomenon  only  in  English  but  a  general process which also can be noticed in many languages all over the world. In addition, lexicalization  of  past  participles  also  happens  in  some  other  languages  as  we  have mentioned before. This study has probed into the motivations of lexicalization of past participles in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th Ed) on the basis of two representative  corpora  of  English  and  deepens  studies  of  morphology,  lexicography and grammar. Though the discussion in previous chapter, we can draw a conclusion of major finding as follows:
