Chapter Two Literature Review 

2.1 Exploring Into Abstracts 
Both  foreign  and  domestic  scholars  have  studied  abstracts.  They  have  made great  contribution  to  this  field.  The  following  part  will  illustrate  abstracts  in  detail from three perspectives: definition, significance and characteristics.  When  we  start  to  read  an  article,  the  abstract  is  usually  the  first  part  we  are likely  to  read.  An  abstract  summarizes  the  content  of  an  article  briefly,  accurately and comprehensively. It helps the readers to survey the content of an article quickly. Therefore, great efforts and careful attention must be devoted to writing an abstract. Abstracts  have  been  defined  from  different  views  by  researchers.  But  they  share several fundamental points. Some representative ones will be listed here.  (1) An abstract is a summary of a manuscript that allows the readers to identify the  concept  of  a  paper  quickly  and  accurately  to  determine  its  relevance  to  their interests. (William E. Fisher, 2005) (2)  Abstract  is  considered  to  be  a  mini-version  of  the  paper  and  the  abstract should  provide  a  brief  summary  of  each  of  the  main  section  of  the  thesis.  (Day, 1998)   The  previous  definitions  share  similar  views  concerning  the  nature  and functions  of  an  abstract.  The  brevity  of  abstracts  is  emphasized  in  the  above quotations.
