logical  prospective.  Richard (1992:309)  defines  nominalization  as  “the  grammatical  process  of  forming  nouns from other parts of speech, usually from verbs or adjectives”. Matthews (2000:244) also puts forward a similar concept in Oxford Concise Dictionary of Linguistics. He claims that nominalization “is any process by which either a noun or a syntactic unit functioning as a noun phrase is derived from any other kind of unit such as a verb or an  adjective”.  All  in  all,  the  two  linguists  agree  that  the  conversion  of  a  verb  or  an adjective to a noun plays a crucial role in the creation of nominalization.  The concept of nominalization is extended by Bussmann (2000:327-328) in his book Routledge Dictionary of Language and Linguistics.  Nominalization is defined as  derivation  from  another  word  class,  such  as  verb,  adjective  or  even  the combination  of  other  nouns  to  a  noun.  In  a  boarder  sense,  all  word  classes  can  be transformed  into  nouns.  This  is  a  productive  and  morphological  process  of  word formation.

Chapter Five Results and Discussion

This  chapter  presents  the  results  of  the  distribution  and  syntactic  features  of nominalization. It also discusses the ideational, interpersonal and textual functions of nominalization in abstracts of academic journal articles.  

5.1 Distribution of Nominalization in Academic Abstracts
