ent  situations,  making  discourses  or  texts  inaccurate  or ineffective.  In  the  practice  of  teaching  and  learning,  the  author  has  found  misuses  of synonyms by students. In order to investigate and better cope with the problem, it is necessary to carry out an empirical study. It is known that end is a common word in English, and it has some synonyms. So this word is a good example for investigation. This  study  aims  to  see  how  native  speakers  of  English  and  Chinese  learners  of English  use  its  synonyms  by  looking  at  the  frequency  distribution  of  end，stop，close，finish  and  conclude,  and  conducts  error  analysis  in  terms  of  colligation, collocation  and  semantic  prosody  made  by  Chinese  learners  of  English.  When  the errors  are  diagnosed  and  the  reasons  underlying  these  errors  are  analyzed,  this typical example can shed light on more words with synonyms, so that teachers and students  can  get  some  inspirations  for  their  teaching  or  learning,  and  the  insights from this study can extend to the other kinds of synonyms. It is also hoped that this study  can  supplement  previous  research  and contribute  to  the  development  of  error analysis theory concerning synonyms.

Chapter Two Literature Review 

2.1 Synonyms  
Synonyms have been studied for so many years that there are various kinds of definitions.  According  to  the  7th  Edition  of  Oxford  Advanced  Learner’s English-Chinese  Dictionary,  synonym  refers  to  “a  word  or  expression  that  has  the same  or  nearly  the  same  meaning  as  another  in  the  same  language”  (2009).  The definition  of  “synonym”  given  by  Longman  Dictionary  of  Contemporary  English seems  narrower  as  “a  word  with  the  same  meaning  as  another  word  in  the  same language” (2014).  Definitions  of  synonyms  have  been  provided  by  scholars  at  home  and  abroad. Carter  (1987)  defines  synonymy  as  a  symmetrical  or  bilateral  sense  relation,  in which more than one linguistic form may have the same prepositional or conceptual meaning.
