bsp;Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English and “near-synonyms” are put forward, which are included within the definition of “synonyms” in Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary. According to Lin and Liu (2005), synonyms are defined with reference to the forms more than meaning itself as “words different in sound and spelling but identical or similar in meaning”. According to Dai and He (2010), “synonymy refers to the sameness or close similarity of meaning. Words that are close in meaning are called synonyms.” Synonyms mentioned in these two definitions refer to both synonyms and near-synonyms put forward by Lyons.

2.2 Error Analysis
Analysis Firstly, what is an error? Different scholars define the term in different ways. Corder (1973) refers to an error as a breach of the code and a deviation from what is regarded as the norm. He assumes that learner errors are significant in three ways: 1) For teachers, errors serve a pedagogic purpose by showing what learners have mastered and what have not yet, so that teachers could make a comprehensive teaching plan to improve them; 2) for researchers, errors could also provide evidence about how learners have acquired the target language, and what strategies they have used while learning the target language. For example, by analyzing some target language errors made by Chinese learners of English, researchers can get some information of the process for them to learn English; 3) for learners themselves, errors making could be a kind of learning method in discovering the rules of the target language. According to Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982), errors are “those parts of conversation or composition that deviate from some selected norms of mature language performance”. Littlewood (2000) puts it in this way: “An error is an unintentional deviation from the norms of the target language”. While Brown (2001) adds that an error is “a noticeable deviation from the adult grammar of a native speaker, reflecting the interlanguage competence of the learner”. On the basis of these different versions, an error can be summarized as an unintentional noticeable deviation made by both second language learners and native speakers from what is regarded as the norm of the target language.
