2.2   Identification of the Spatial Prototypical Sense of Preposition 
The  Prototype  Theory  proposed  by  Rosch  assumes  that  some  members  of  a category are typical and central while others are peripheral (1973, 1975). Deane (2005) also pointed out the importance of finding out the primary or prototypical sense of a preposition. How to define which sense of preposition is the core or prototypical sense remains debatable. According to Sandra and Rice, the core or prototypical sense of a same  preposition  can  be  different,  because  different  researchers  have  different interpretations or preferences (1995). Langacker (1987) proposed two major types of evidence to narrow the arbitrariness of the selection of a prototypical sense, which are linguistic and empirical.  Basing on the Langacker’s suggestion, Tyler and Evans (2003:47) proposed five criteria for deciding the prototypical sense of preposition in their book The Semantics of  English  Preposition,  which  is  considered  to  be  the  most  influential  criteria  in determining the prototypical sense of a preposition and is adopted in many researches. These  five  criteria  are:  1)  the  earliest  attested  meaning  2)  predominance  in  the semantic  network  3)  use  in  composite  forms  4)  relations  to  other  prepositions  5) testable  grammatical  predictions.  Next  these  five  criteria  will  be  elaborately introduced one by one.

Chapter Five   Results and Discussions  

This  chapter  is  conducted  to  explore  the  spatial  prototypical  expansion  of FROM.  First,  the  various  senses  of  FROM  appearing  in  the  Crown  corpus  will  be presented. Next, the spatial prototypical sense of FROM will be determined with the help  of  Tyler  and  Evans’  (2003:47)  five  criteria.  At  last,  the  spatial  prototypical expansion of FROM will be explored in the light of Conceptual Blending Theory.
