As what the thesis has talked about in chapter three, Attitude System is considered the coresystem of the Appraisal System, which is realized by attitudinal lexis. The attitude reflected inliterary fairy tales could be positive or negative, and the resource of the attitude could be fromthe author or the characters in the tales. Affect lexes evaluate from the aspect of emotion,Judgment lexes evaluate from the aspect of morality and legality while Appreciation lexesevaluate from the aspect of aesthetics. Because of the large amount of Attitude resources, therealizations of the Attitude sub-system are only briefly listed in Table 5.1. And the overalldistributions of Appraisal resources and Attitude resources in Chinese and British literary fairytales are shown in Table 5.2 and Table 5.3.Contrasting the two tables above, it could be found that in both Chinese and British literaryfairy tales, Attitude resources accounts for the largest percentage, which are separately 46.94%and 36.09%. However, Attitude resources are more widely distributed in Chinese literary fairytales than that in British literary fairy tales, which means that Chinese writers are more likely touse attitudinal lexes in their works. In Chinese literary fairy tales, Engagement resources takesup the second largest percentage while in British literary fairy tales, it is the Graduationresources that are ranked the second place. But it could be seen from the table that there is nosignificant difference among the distribution of the three subsystems in British literary fairytales, while in Chinese literary fairy tales, the rate of Attitude resources is much higher than thatof the Engagement resources and Graduation resources.

Conclusion

By adopting quantitative and qualitative method, the thesis aims at finding out theAppraisal resources distribution features of Chinese and British literary fairy tales, trying tofind out the similarities and differences between the two groups from the perspective ofAppraisal System, and what the values are revealed from the Appraisal resources. Aftercontrasting the Appraisal resources from the perspectives of three sub-systems of the AppraisalSystem, namely Attitude, Engagement and Graduation, the distribution of the two groups havebeen explored. In addition, the thesis also shows the realization of interpersonal meaning ofAppraisal resources by analyzing certain evaluative lexes in Chinese and British literary fairytales.After contrasting the distribution of Appraisal resources of Chinese and British literaryfairy tales, it is found that Attitude resources, Engagement resources and Graduation resourcesare all employed by Chinese and British writers to deliver certain interpersonal meanings.Among which the Attitude resources take up the largest percentage in both Chinese and Britishliterary fairy tales. The proportions of Engagement resources and Graduation resources in bothgroups are very similar, but the Graduation resources are more often used in British literaryfairy tales than that in Chinese literary fairy tales. Both groups tend to use inscribed Appraisalresources than invoked resources, and the proportions of inscribed Appraisal resources in bothgroups are much higher than invoked resources of the two groups.
