In order to adapt to the national strategy and the need for globalization, the LocalAnnals Editorial Committee of Jiangsu Province begins to compile the English version ofthe Jiangsu Province Yearbook every year since 2012, and the systematic andcomprehensive publicity of Jiangsu Province has been carried out. As one of the candidatesfor the MTI degree, the author took part in the translation team and was responsible fortranslating Chapter 19 and Chapter 23 in the Chinese edition of Jiangsu Province Yearbook2018 with 10837 Chinese characters, which focuses on sports and public safety of JiangsuProvince.

Chapter 19 includes three main sections, public fitness, competitive sports and sportsindustry. The first part introduces in detail the construction of public sports facilities,national fitness activities, construction of public fitness scientific guidance platform andnational fitness instructor team. The second part introduces in detail the results of Jiangsu’sparticipation in the world championships, the 13th National Games and the importantsports events held by Jiangsu Province. The third part introduces sports industrydevelopment, sports industry base construction, sports health characteristic townconstruction and sports lottery in detail. Chapter 23 consists of nine main parts: naturaldisaster, agricultural safety, food and drug safety, public health safety, information security,comprehensive management of social security, fire control safety, production safety andemergency management. It uses a large number of data to objectively introduce thesituation of public safety in different areas of Jiangsu Province in 2017.

1.2 Features of the Source Text

“Translation consists in producing in the receptor language the closest naturalequivalent to the message of the source language, first in meaning, and secondly in style”(Nida, 1975:33). Before translation, finding out the linguistic and stylistic features of thesource text is very crucial.

1.2.1 Stylistic Features of the Source Text

The style of yearbook is unique and it may contain many styles in one text because ithas different columns, and each has its own way of expression, especially in some localcomprehensive yearbooks (姚世刚，1998). Determined by the nature and function ofyearbook, it is narrative and descriptive. It is a narrative style for recording events, thingsand persons, and a descriptive style of introduction to facts and knowledge. It usually getsstraight to the point and the matter, concise and comprehensive. “Text types are dividedaccording to the main functions of texts” (Katharina Reiss, 2000:25). The main function ofthis kind of text is to exchange information, knowledge and opinions. Therefore, JiangsuProvince Yearbook 2018 is an informative text. According to Katharina Reiss (2004),informative text is content-oriented, and the linguistic means of conveying information islogic or referential meaning.
