Provoking the Vigor of Language Many slang words use rhetoric such as comparison, hyperbole. All these ways make slang words full of vitality, humor, intelligence. For example, ‘don’t let the cat out of the bag (don’t reveal the secret), face lace (wrinkles)’, such words will led our talking more humorous, convenient, imaginable, even go easily. Additionally, the slang could express the strong emotion of the speaker throughout hyperbole and other methods. Slang is the tool of language communication, although it is not normal and elegant, it can pass on various emotions. This usage of slang can give a deep impression on the reader or listener, and deepen their rational understanding. Such as “she is the killer (she is so beautiful), his jokes killed me (his jokes is very funny), to have face as long as a fiddle (unhappy)’etc. the figure of speech of American slang can make us distinctly to know the various mood of the speaker, such as happy, anger and other attitudes. Besides the above-mentioned figures of speech, American slang is short, simple, and colorful; which can make our communication more effective, activates the language and propel the development of language. Its function of provoking the vigor of language includes two hands: in written language and oral language. 2.1. Written Language There are many abuses about slang, and it has often been ignored and dismissed with a contemptuous sneer. Partridge in The World of Words wrote: “‘English: good; Bad; Worse’: the good English is Standard English; the bad English is illiteracy and such slang as is used by a person ignorant of the fact that it is slang; the worst is cant, or the speech of the underworld” (116). Maybe, most people will think the language of Shakespeare is so distinguished. Actually, it is a misunderstanding. The characters of his works came from various social levels. A lot of slang words are used in literature works in order to pursuing the reality and portraying the figure. Shakespeare also used many folk slang, which are full of civilian wit and humor. It is better to describe the figure’s personality in works with the help of slang. Take the humor as an example, if a reader want to understand the humor, he or she should read over the whole story even know some backgrounds; but the humor could be directly incarnated in one slang word or phrase. Throughout the morphology and the use of rhetoric, the reader can’t help laughing as soon as they see the word. So the humor of slang words is simpler, more direct than the Standard English. Slang could make the laugh obvious to all and keep tears between lines. Many writers are in favor of using slang in their creations, not only in novels but also in movies. Nowadays, we can easily find slang words in great works of famous writers, Times, New York Times. Slang is enriching our spare time and bringing more entertainment to our cultural life.
