ies to the method of acronym, shortening, repetition to convey its meaning. For example, ‘NATO’(no action, talk only), ‘GASP’(Group against smoker’s pollution), ‘poop’ comes from ‘nincompoop’, ‘nuke’ refers to ‘nuclear weapon’, ‘no-no’(taboo), ‘dum-dum’ (very general),‘huggy-huggy’ (intimate) . These usages of slang words are not only humorous but also lively. The Americans who are full of imaginations and creations continually create new slang words, which bring various excitement and freshness to them; meanwhile, the interesting forms can evoke their interest to learn English, and cause their study much easier. 2.2. Oral Language Many slang words utilize the euphony of pronunciation in order to be easily understood and remembered. Particularly, many slang words adopt the approach of rhyme which makes the effect of language more expressive, humorous. The most commonly-used formations of rhyme are as follows. The first kind of rhyme is alliteration. For example, ‘tick-tack’(a ticking or tapping beat like that of a clock or watch), ‘flip-flop’(a type of open shoe held on by the toes and loose on the back),‘tip-top’(of the highest quality). Another kind of rhyme is the end rhyme such as ‘cop-shop’(police office), funny-money (the substitute of money), fender-bender (petty matter), half-inch (pinch), ‘razzle-dazzle’(be lost in), ‘hurry-scurry’(in a flurry), ‘huity-toity’ (high and mighty). As for the beginner, the usage of rhyme can make the people feel that the language is so lively rhyme and sweet-sounding. At the same time, these formations of slang words could be easily remembered and spoken, which is helpful to the widespread circulation and smooth communication of language. Conclusion Yet no phenomenon is more amazing than American slang, and it is one of Americans’ greatest achievements and resources, and it’s a subject endlessly fascinating in itself. American slang is one of the most active and sensitive parts of language and an effective weapon in communication. These remarks sum up the paradox of slang very well: “slang is the foe and the friend of the English language” (Partridge.21). This paper elaborates the reason of American slang existence from the angles of history, society, psychology and personality of Americans. On the other hand, this paper analyzes the existence value of American slang from the aspects of refraction function and usage function. The slang refracts the discrepancy of social identity, the trend of oral English and the life of ordinary people. At the same time, it refracts a kind of attitude how the people treat the reality. Its usage function includes overcoming the communicative barrier and provoking the vigor of language. The author arrives at the conclusion that American slang is useful and helpful, which can help us to speak and apply English properly in some situation; meanwhile, the correct usage of slang can lessen our communication mistakes that comes from cultural difference, which will increase our interpersonal cross-cultural abilities. We should have an objective attitude to the American slang. Acknowledgements I owe my deepest gratitude to Mr. Liu Shengming, who conscientiously offered valuable, insightful and detailed advice on various matters throughout the process. This paper would not have been possible without his patient and sincere assistance. Meanwhile, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my college teachers.
