In Pride and Prejudice, Austen's feminist thoughts find manifestation intwo major aspects— the characterization of female characters and the viewof marriage. As far as Austen is concerned, the heroines cast ofl' thestereotyped images of `angle' or `monster' and are instead bestowed withindividual personality and judging competence. Elizabeth Bennet is theincarnation of the author's faith in female intelligence and her protestingspirit. In addition, disagreeing with her society's general notion of women'sgetting married just or predominantly for financial security, Jane Austenclaims that women must marry for love other than anything else and onlyapproves of those marriages based on mutual respect and understanding.
However, influenced by the social and philosophical views of that time,Austen must have limitations in her female consciousness, which arerevealed in that she appears to be almost entirely satisfied with the restrictionof women to domestic and polite functions, and that her middle-classheroines, all like Cinderella, must end with being promoted to a higherstratum by a man of fortune and thus fulfilling their value and they, to ourdisappointment, seem too passive in pursuing their ultimate felicity. In all, seen from the historical angle, Jane Austen can be regarded as anearly feminist; her writing exerts a positive influence on the development offeminism and arousing women's individual consciousness.
