Conclusion

Based on her own experience,Harriet Jacobs wrote the autobiographical slavenarrative Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl(1861),which introduced the process ofhow she changed from a female slave to a free woman.It is the first American femaleslave narrative,which has a unique female narrative perspective and abundantnarrative content.This thesis uses gaze theory to analyze the sexual gaze and blackfemale slave’s counter-gaze measures in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.

First of all,this thesis introduces the gaze theory and illustrates the sexualexploitation of black slaves under American racial slavery.Both black men and blackwomen suffered from sexual exploitation by whites.White men took advantage ofblack men’s sexuality to force them to have sex with female slaves to add wealth.Their children were born to be slaves and could be sold at will.Hence,black men lostthe chance to be a good father.Although the sexual relationships between black menand white women were forbidden,white mistresses used their power to seduce blackmen secretly.Similar to black men,black female slaves suffered from white men’ssexual harassment.They were forced to separate from their children and weredeprived of the right to be mothers.Both black men and women were consideredsexual tools and breeding machines.
