摘要:The present research has investigated the Status Quo of the senior middle school students'English reading in the minority-gathering areas in the southwest regions of China throughquestionnaires and the interviews from nine aspects of the students' understanding of reading,their reading purposes, reading interests, extracurricular reading time, reading speed, readingmaterials, reading habits, reading strategies and reading obstacles. The results find outs that thereare still some serious problems existing in students' reading study.
nglish Curriculum reform will be carried out all-roundly in senior middleschools of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the year of 2012. This study is to meet theneed of course reform that emphasizes the importance of cultivating the students' reading ability.Secondly, this study will meet the students' needs. They are eager to improve their ownreading ability and get higher scores in the NMET in which reading comprehension takes up avery large percentage.Thirdly, this study will provide some useful information and suggestions for the teachers inthe minority-gathering areas who are eager to improve their students' reading ability and skillsfor comprehension, further help them to obtain high scores in the NMET.Lastly, the present study aims at surveying the situation of senior middle school students' inthe minority-gathering areas to find out the problems existing in reading and put forward somepractical solutions to improve the effect of English reading teaching and learning, which will beexpected to make some contribution to facilitating the thorough implementation of Guangxi2012 NECS from the perspective of reading. The author also hopes that the findings of thepresent study will serve the future studies as reference.
1.3 An Overall Structure of the
thesis
This thesis consists of six chapters: introduction,
literature review,
methodology, dataanalysis and major findings, suggestions for teachers and students as well as the conclusion.Chapter One is a brief introduction which mainly describes the background of the researchfocusing on the importance of English reading, the significance of the research and the structureof the thesis.Chapter Two contains a review of literature which chiefly introduces some relevant theoriesconcerning the present English reading research, including definitions of reading, purposes ofreading, characteristics of reading, the factors influencing reading, four models of reading, theprevious research on reading strategies abroad and in China and the principles for teachingreading.Chapter Three presents the details in the methodology of the investigation, including theobjectives, subjects, and instruments of the research as well as the procedure of data collection.Chapter Four involves data analysis, discussion of the questionnaires and interviews.Furthermore, the author summarizes some major findings in the process of senior middle schoolstudents' English reading.Chapter Five offers the corresponding suggestions for English teachers and students basedon the above-mentioned findings and problems in Chapter Four.Chapter Six is the conclusion of the present research which includes a brief summary of thestudy, states limitations of the present research and puts forward suggestions for future study.
