1.2 Research questions
This thesis aims to provide answers to three questions: Can leveled teaching helpstudents get better developed both intellectually and emotionally in the learning process? Canleveled teaching stimulate the learning enthusiasm and initiative of the students? Can leveledteaching improve the students’ English competence efficiently?
Chapter 2 literature review
In this chapter, the author will present a literature review, including description ofleveled teaching, a brief description of previous study of leveled teaching both in China andabroad.
2.1 Relevant Researches on Leveled Teaching Abroad
Leveled teaching is teaching according to the students’ existing knowledge, ability andpotential. It stresses that teaching should differ from student to student. Students tend to bescientifically divided into several groups of different level and receive different teaching. Inthe group of similar level, under the teachers’ proper strategy, they can get the mostinteraction and best development. The division is always based on the intelligence test scoresand students' academic performance.At the beginning of the 20th century, leveled teaching was introduced into the schoolteaching. Since then, stratified classes has become one of the main features in schooleducation. Since 1916, the research of the leveled teaching has also been launched a lot.However, the leveled teaching education in theoretical research is a controversial topic, whichexperienced a “saddle type” process of development.
It started in America. In the early 20thcentury, the United States faced the influx ofchildren of immigrants. In order to educate these children of different background, educationofficials think it is necessary to divide them into groups based on their ability and pastacademic performance. By the 50s, almost all of the primary and high school students inBritain were assigned to the different classes according to ability. But it started to takecriticism from all sides, thinking it strengthened the racial inequality, for the students ofdifferent levels don’t take equal education, creating discrimination against “low-abilitychildren”, and causing physical and mental suffer to them. And giving special care to “highability children” is to breed their being too pound. At the same time, leveled teaching enablesstudents to deepen the gap between each other, easily causing social contradictions, and is akind of undemocratic teaching organization form. Thus, leveled teaching faced a downturn.In 1957, the former Soviet’s successful satellites launch makes the western countries,especially the United States, reflect on their education system.
