Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Relevant Studies Abroad and at Home
Numerous foreign scholars hold the view that recitation is not helpful in learninga second language. So studies abroad concerning recitation input are relatively few,and only certain scholars and linguists have some degree of interest in the study ofrecitation input. A well-known western scholar Ellis (1985) points out that recitationinput is a course of conscious attention. After reciting any kinds of language materials,learners can acquire new words and expressions, fixed phrases and sentences, andgradually they can apply them to daily communication (Ellis, 1985). Anothercelebrated linguist Sinclair believes that English is not only a systematic languagebased on grammar that could be analyzed, but also a flexible language based onmemory that is formulaic. And for those foreign language learners, it is necessary tomemorize various categories of foreign language articles (1991). One behavioristscholar Skinner considers that human beings' language behavior belongs tooperational behavior. Each act should have been accomplished by a variety ofreinforcement methods for a certain mount of times. Without the necessaryreinforcement, the language habits can never be formed. In addition,only by positiveand correct reinforcement can individuals establish a stabilized responsive languagesystem (qted from Zhang Dajun, 1999).

2.2 Relevant Theories
In the 1970s and 1980s, Stephen Krashen, a famous American linguist developeda language input theory known as the input hypothesis, which is also called the monitor model. It includes five great hypotheses of second-language acquisition. Theyare the input hypothesis, the acquisition-learning hypothesis, the monitor hypothesis,the natural order hypothesis, and the affective filter hypothesis. Originally,the inputhypothesis is just a part of the five hypotheses, but then the input hypothesis refers tothe five hypotheses as a whole. And the input hypothesis is the core of the secondlanguage acquisition theories. It is considered as the most important notion of thetheories of second language acquisition because it has answered the question “how toacquire a second language", which is a key question in language learning. Krashenbelieves that in order to acquire a second language, one needs to activate the languageacquisition mechanism in his brain. And the requirement of effective activation is 、sufficient comprehensible language input.
