Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background of the Present Study
The famous linguist Wilkins (1972) puts forward the idea that:“Withoutgrammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.”Without vocabulary, there will be no communication. The language competence cannot be separated from accumulation and application of vocabulary. So the acquisitionof vocabulary is crucial in English learning process.Recently, many researchers have focused on the study of vocabulary learning.However, the results are not satisfying. How to improve English vocabulary teachingof high school students, and how to help students learn English vocabulary in ascientific and efficient way are still the most important questions in front of the highschool teachers. Despite the previous curriculum reform and textbooks are highlightedthe importance of words, English vocabulary teaching is still limping at present.Firstly, teaching for passing exams or getting high grades is a great danger forvocabulary learning. Usually the words learn could not be used by learners. A majority of learners just remember the meanings and collections of words but theydon’t know how to put them into real contexts. One of the most important reasons isthe purpose of learning. Vocabulary learning is not only for passing examinations, butalso for communicating. Language is used to communicate with others. This is themost important and fundamental task of learning language. Learning words withoutusing, there will be no advances.Secondly, English vocabulary learning lacks scientific guidelines. In the processof vocabulary learning, few efficient learning methods are used. Through the passiveand procedural learning and training, it seems that students have successfullycompleted the formulated tasks. However, what students have learned by mechanicalmemory will not linger on long in the mind. To improve teaching methods is of greatimportance for vocabulary learning. The sole way of vocabulary learning contributesto learners’ losing interest. Therefore, more scientific and effective learning strategiesare necessary for them to learn English words.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Vocabulary is a prerequisite to learn English well. According to the EnglishCurriculum Standard of Senior High School, the graduates of senior high school haveto master 3300-4500 words and phrases. However, English vocabulary teaching andlearning is a vulnerable spot all the time. Facing to the present situation of vocabularyteaching and learning, to find a strategy which can improve English vocabularylearning is necessary.For one thing, this thesis has great practical significance. English vocabularyteaching is devoid of effectiveness. Throughout the English vocabulary teaching inthe class, many teachers do not adopt appropriate and effective teaching methods.When it comes to a new module, teachers will teach new words concentratedly. Forexample, the explanation of pronunciation, spelling, meaning, application. Mostteachers are busy in teaching grammar and improving learners’ reading and writingskills for exams. They spend little time on vocabulary learning techniques. This kindof vocabulary teaching is always a negative remembering process. Students not onlycan not grasp words, but also lose learning interest and motivation.
