Chapter 2 literature review 

This  chapter  provides  the  literature  review.  It  describes  the  researches  on  the theory  of  lexical  chunks  which  includes  definitions,  classifications,  theoretical background and summary of the literature review. Meanwhile, it introduces something about researches on lexical chunks in English writing teaching, which mainly focuses on  the  previous  researches  in  English  writing  with  this  theory.  This  chapter  is  the theoretical basis of this study. 

2.1 Definitions of lexical chunks
The concept of lexical chunks was first proposed by Becker (1975), he believes that  the  lexical  as  a  whole  chunk  were  stored  in  a  string  in  the  brain,  which  can  be used as a prefabricated block for learners to use as a whole or a minor change (Wang Peifu  2010:17-20).  However,  up  to  now,  there  is  not  a  unified  conclusion  about  the definition of lexical chunks. Moreover, the researchers give different terms from their different  research  perspectives.  The  linguist  Becker  (1975)  believes  it  as  formulaic frames  with  analyzed  space;  Krashen  (1978)  regards  it  as  semi-fixed  patterns  for using;  As  Pawley  &  Syder  (1983:191)  explains  it,  lexical  chunks  are  lexicalized sentence stems that can be used by the learners. Lewis (1993) names it lexical chunks that  are  familiar  for  us;  Haworth  (1998)  uses  prefabricated  language  to  describe  it; Nattinger  &  De Carrico  (1992)  names  it  lexical  phrases;  On  account  of  different perspective of every research at home or abroad. The researchers use different words and  terminology  to  describe.  Thus,  they  get  various  conclusions  through  different views  about  this  concept.  Therefore,  there  are  many  different  definitions  for  the concept of lexical chunks. Pawley  &  Syde  (1983:191)  believes  that  lexical  chunks  are  the  “lexicalized sentences”.  They  believe  that  “lexicalized  sentence  stems”  are  the  “syntax  and lexical” that their content are some of the most fixed units, which are long or short”.
