2.2 Classifications of lexical chunks
The most common and widely accepted classification of lexical chunks is Michael Lewis and Nattinger & De Carrico’s classification.Michael Lewis (1997:255-270) divides the lexical chunks into four types based on the syntactic functions and semantic relations: (1) Words & poly-words: which are the traditional term, the former refers to the traditional meaning of the word, the latter refers to over one word by a fixed phrase or clauses, the word can not be replaced, for example: “in my opinion”, “as long as” can not be replaced by “on my opinion”, “as longer as”. (2) Collocations: means a higher frequency of word combinations, such as verb + noun (put up your hands), adjective + noun (a beautiful girl), is a kind of relationship between words in the long term. This relationship is a kind of structure that can predict each other’s partner, such as suicide must match with commit. To understand these collocations is the basis for forming accurate and natural expressions of English. (3) Institutionalized expression: indicates a fixed or semi-fixed word that combined with confirmed pragmatic functions, which are the complete sentences or fixed at the beginning of the sentence, such as “If I were you…”, “I’ m afraid…”, and “How are you”? The institutionalized expressions are mainly refers to spoken language.
