5.1 Major Findings
Through investigation and data analysis, the author found that most English teachers can respond to the requirements of curriculum standards and implement cultural teaching in English teaching. They are all interested in the content of cultural teaching, but they cannot understand the meaning expressed by the content deeply. The cultural teaching ability is lacking, but cultural teaching awareness is very strong. The major findings can be summarized as follows:
(1) Senior high school English teachers have strong cultural teaching awareness, but their cultural teaching ability needs to be improved.
From Table 4-3 and Table 4-4, it can be seen that the mean value of Table 4-3 is relatively lower than that of Table 4-4. To be specific, the mean values of Item 33 (mean value=2.935), Item 34 (mean value=2.843) and Item 35 (mean value=2.870) are all less than 3. In addition, from Item 19, 69.91% of teachers acknowledge that there is no fixed teaching method. It can be concluded that teachers don’t have a positive evaluation of their cultural teaching level, and teachers do not have a good command of the knowledge of English culture. Thus, there is evidence to prove that their cultural teaching ability needs to be improved.
(2) Senior high school English teachers’ cultural awareness among four dimensions is imbalanced.
According to the group analysis of the four dimensions, it can be concluded that the values of goal awareness, implementation awareness and evaluation awareness are higher than that of resource awareness no matter how to group. Teachers do not think there is enough time to have culture teaching. They do have cultural teaching awareness, but class time is not permitted. In addition, their awareness of curriculum resources is weak. Most people have not found the cultural teaching resources that are suitable for them. Instead, they are looking forward to more resources in the textbooks.
