Nonverbalcommunication cannot be suppressed by human will; it has close relation to humanemotions; it is approachable by observers; and the most important is that it cancommunicate unique meanings. Nonverbal communication in class is thecommunication between teachers and students by using any means while verballanguage is not included. It is such an important communication means inclassroom teaching that without it the classroom teaching will be didactic, boring and vapid. As the growing of body and mind, high school students are no longer thedocile children. They begin to have keen self-image and self-esteem. Teachers’dressing, deportment and styles acted as role model for students to imitate in schools. And everyone knows that English is a compulsory subject in high school learningand almost all of English classes are organized in the classroom. Moreover, theEnglish classroom teaching is performed in the form of teacher and studentsinteraction. A knowledgeable English teacher speaking without any nonverbalinteractions with students in class is not an excellent teacher. Only verbalcommunication in the classroom, a public place, is not enough to make studentsattend lectures effectively and it is easy to misunderstand between the teacher andhis students. In addition, a lot of teaching methods from home and abroadmentioned nonverbal communication in educational domain, such asSuggestopedia, the Silent Way, Total Physical Response etc. So it can be safelysaid that the nonverbal communication of teachers is a useful and indispensablecommunication means in class.
In order to expound teachers’ nonverbal communication in English classroomteaching, the author of this paper firstly indicates the background andsignification of this research on nonverbal communication in current Englishclassroom teaching. Then a detailed literature is given, from definition ofnonverbal communication, comparative classification at home and abroad amongwhich Cooper’s classification in classroom teaching is emphasized, characteristics, function, to the theory bases of this paper and related teaching methods about nonverbal communication. Then the author made a survey in threehigh schools of Yiyang district for about four months. The research results showthat nonverbal communication plays a great part in English classroom teachingof high schools. By analysis of the questionnaires, interview and classroomobservation, the author found that the high school students have a curious andcritical eye on teachers’ nonverbal behaviors. In addition, teachers’ appropriateapplication of nonverbal communication in class is beneficial to students’retention of lectures, relationship between teachers and students, participation inlessons and classroom management. At last, by analyzing the current using statusof nonverbal communication of those six teachers, the author found somepotential problems that influence teaching: the traditional concept of teachers, the absence of skill training about nonverbal communication, indifference offeedback by teachers and misusing nonverbal communication by teachers.
