摘要:At present, our domestic researchers who are interested in students' individualdifferences often confine their studies to the relationship between a certain learner factorand English teaching and learning.
2. Literature Review
2.1 Definition of individual differences
The term "Individual Differences” originated from Psychology. It defines therelatively stable dissimilarity between different individuals in their behavior, mainly inthe physiological and psychological aspects (Pi Liansheng, 2001). It is individualdifferences that make each person a unique human being in the world. Individualdifferences are ubiquitous. For example, a teacher can easily find that students in thesame class would perform a variety of different reactions to his or her teaching. That is amanifestation of individual differences.Research on learners' individual differences can be traced back to ancient times. It issaid that the great thinker and educator Confucius (551-479BC) in ancient China was thefirst person to discover the phenomenon of individual differences. His ideas aboutstudents' individual differences in learning were recorded in Analects of Confucius, inwhich he put forward that teachers should get to know about students' interest andcharacteristics by observation and adopt different instructional methods for differenttypes of students.Researchers' attention to individual differences in modem times stemmed fromphysiologists and psychologists' laboratory identification. In 1879, Wilhelm Wundt setup the world's first psychological laboratory. When psychologists were making a study ofthe common characteristics of human beings' behaviors in the lab, they found thesubjects' responses to the same stimulus often varied instead. At first, they thought thatmight be caused by experimental errors. Then, after a long period of repeated experimentand observation, they finally figured out that the phenomenon had nothing to do withexperimental errors but arose from the innate differences between the subjects. Followingthe publication of the discovery, studies on individual differences started to prevail.Scholars like Galton, Cattell,Thomdike, Binet and Stem all have done large amounts ofresearch on this aspect (Xu Jieying, 1999).
…………
2.2 Cause of individual differences
The cause of individual differences has been one of the research concerns in thefield of Educational Psychology all the time, which can provide a basis and premise forindividualized teaching approaches and effective pedagogic intervention.Generally speaking, the formation of individual differences is considered as a resultof the comprehensive effect of three aspects— physical, psychological and social. But,there is a long- existing controversy among scholars about whether individual differencesare mainly attributed to prenatal heredity or to postnatal development (Shao Jingjin,2004). Some researchers favor the hereditary determinism. They believe it is congenitalgenes or hereditary characters that determine the main parts of individual differences(Guo Xiuyan, 2005). For instance,in the 19^ century, Galton made a study on the degreeof correlation between twins' intelligence and then, based on his research result, proposed that differences between individuals are determined by heredity (Shao Jingjin,2004).
