vements is current hit among teachers. They are paying increasingly attention to the teaching of English reading classes. In view of that, to fully lay emphasis on the significance of cultural awareness in English reading teaching has been a way that can be tried out. 

Chapter 2  Literature Review

2.1 Cultural Awareness

The definition of cultural awareness is given in the next part. Besides, this thesis refers to the types and levels of cultural awareness. 

2.1.1 The Definition of Cultural Awareness

In English Curriculum Criteria, Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China  (2020) stated, cultural awareness referred to the understanding of Chinese and foreign cultures and the recognition of excellent culture. It was the cross-cultural cognition, attitude and behavioral orientation students put up in the context of globalization. It also reflected the value orientation of the subject core competencies. The cultural awareness cultivation would help students to enhance their national identity and family-country feelings and heighten their cultural self-confidence as well as the community consciousness of human destiny so that they would learn to do and grow up to be persons with sense of social responsibility and civilization accomplishment. 

The definition has its origin in modern China. 

Li Hongen (2012) thought, cultural awareness referred to the essence, characteristics, temperament and style of people or things in terms of values, ways of thinking, behavior, etc., which was the provision of the cultural attributes of people or things, as well as an important representation of their value orientation.  

In fact, cultural awareness is the spiritual foundation accumulated by a nation’s culture in the long course of history, and it is the soul of a nation. Whether there is cultural awareness and whether the degree of cultural awareness awakening is a sign of social progress. 

2.2 The CAC in English Teaching at Home and Abroad

The cultural awareness cultivation in English teaching at Home and Abroad has developed prosperously in different times. The following are the detailed contents. 

2.2.1 The CAC in English Teaching Abroad

This paper defines the conceptual search for the cultural awareness cultivation in foreign studies as cultural teaching related to language teaching. Promoting language teaching and cultivating cultural knowledge in teaching are the main characteristics of its gradual development. 

As early as European countries adopted Latin as the main content of foreign language learning, the cultural knowledge learning was involved in the promotion of language learning. But it was not until the early 1880s that the French educator F. Gouin (1880) explicitly pointed out for the first time in his language teaching work The Art of Language Teaching and Learning, the importance of culture learning in language teaching, including culture teaching as a clear teaching goal. It was supposed to be an inseparable part of language teaching through curriculum and teaching methods. American anthropologist Sapir (1921) found that it was the communication of the heart behind language communication, so there were culture within the language.
