“Flexible Working as part of family-friendly polices: investigation of the level of awareness of employees at New College Durham.”
The purpose of the research was to figure out in how far employees at New College Durham were aware of the Flexible Working Policy, in how far they felt encouraged to apply for flexible working and how well this Human Resources policy was communicated to staff. Furthermore was the aim to develop recommendations for existing problems of unawareness about flexible working policies. This will be of particular interest for the company as it was not aware of the fact that employees do not feel encouraged by their employer to apply for flexible working and mostly reflected a slightly negative attitude towards their management in general. The fact that there was no statistical data stored about how many employees actually worked on flexible working terms made it difficult for the researcher to undermine the findings from the questionnaires and interviews. Since the researcher was not given much information from the company the only sources she had was the findings from interviews and questionnaires, which limited the whole scope of the study. At the same time it reflects the carelessness of management about how to manage employees sensitively.
Main findings:
• The level of awareness was quite high
• Most employees felt neither encouraged nor discouraged to apply for flexible working
• Most employees stated the HR policies were available to everyone
• There is an interest of people to get much more involved with HR policies
• Employees would like to be better informed about their opportunities
• Overall company culture appeared as non-existent, rather sub cultures existing independently
• Commitment and motivation of employees appeared as low
Therefore recommendations include:
• Storing data about applications of employees and their working conditions
• Introducing regular meetings with people to inform about existing and changing policies
• Communicate flexible working policies to staff and increase awareness of policies
